Hey - sounds like the shifter is not sliding the coupler all the way onto the splines if it's a basic H pto. It may be bent or binding and the chatter could be the splines engaging and disconnecting. It's a simple setup just make sure you get full engagement. When you start to move the pto shifter , engine off and in 1st gear, turn the pto by hand and feel how far the pto shifter moves before it starts to engage. The shifter shuold move another 50-70 percent farther after it engages, if it only moves a small amount it's not engaging far enough. Also check the shaft that is up in the trans and look at the tip and make sure they are ok.
