Kelly: It will surprise you how little grade that requires. First time I ever did it I had tractor on much steeper pitch than necessary. Since I didn't do any great sientific measurments, I can't give you exact figures. Second time you will have it dead on. I read with some interest your PTO packing up. This is about par for that era of PTO. I can't remember how many times we rebuilt the old planetary unit on 300. I do know the first time was within 5 years of tractor being new. The clutch type units that went into later tractors up to 460 and 560 were very little better. I must admit at 90 hp my 560 was hardly a fair test. IH really didn't get the IPTO right until 06 and 56 series tractors. I've always said IH should have put a lot more development dollars into IPTO, TA and Hitches in the late 50s. It shouldn't have taken 8 years to take the kinks out of IPTO. Free wheeling TA should have been gone much sooner. Of course hitches had to go with the standard. To me the slowness of IH to react on those items, cost them far more than anyone ever imagined. In our area I watched families that had run nothing but IH after the war, move to other makes starting in the early 60s. Many of them never returned. Some of the ones that did, returned to get hit with things like European engines in late model 886, cavitation in 66 series with no water filter, etc. IH should have known, you can't mess with the knowledge of North American farm families. Auto industry may be able to get away with that selling to the general public.
