IHC used forged 1045 steel for all the gears in the drivetrain. A few of the pump gears were machined bar stock but not many. They were all carburized, except for a couple PTO gears that were induction hardened. Chances of Rusty gears is about Zero unless You drained pure water out of the rearend and no oil. Things that effect bull gear mesh are the condition of the rear axle bearings, The 66-series should have "Straddle Mounted Bull Gears" with tapered roller bearings supporting the bull gear. If they loosen or wear they could cause the bull gear to lose proper mesh with the pinions. The bearings that mount the differential & pinion shafts also effect bull gear mesh. If a bearing or gear has failed in the past it is very possible You have gear tooth damage. I've heard of the hardened surface of the tooth flaking off due to the heat of sustained hard pulls also. That can cause an increase in whine. Lots of those parts are "NLA" from C/NH/IH. And they were VERY expensive back when they were in production. It might be worthwhile to pull the LPTO unit and snoop inside the rearend, and maybe have oil analysis done on the HyTran in the rearend. Noise is one thing but if Your feeling vibration I'd investigate a bit, Your dealing with a MOUNTAIN of torque in that final drive. Those parts are Huge compared to Your 686.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
