They failed mainly because they were somewhat inefficient- especially the fram mounted units because they were powered from the inefficient belt drive gear train. The Electralls tended to be small units as well. Tractor driven PTO generators are now quite common, especially in dairy country, and (I might be wrong)I believe some new tractors may come with 120 V outlets. IH did make some equipment for use- there was an electric haybaler.
