Allen, I went back out to my 966 and pulled the right side tie rod extension. It is 16.5 inches long. It has SIX of those bolt gooves in it. The last one is 1 3/4 inch from the inner end. I don't think they would put that goove so close to the end if it wasn't OK to use it.
