1086 transmission woes

A friend has a 1086 diesel that is making rock crushing noise in the range transmission. He took out the power steering pump and the idler gear was OK but the driving countershaft gear is busted up. It is my guess that there may be bearing problems as well.

My friend has asked me to fix the thing and I was wondering if anyone has any insights as to what kind of a mess I'm getting into.
