WOW!! I maintain that the auto trans is to blame on both counts. I have a '98 4X4 cab and chassis dual wheel 3500 with a 5-speed, 4-valve Cummins, and 3.54 gears. It has gotten less than 10mpg ONCE pulling a #6500 trailer and #15000 bachoe in a heavy wind, usually 12 to 14. But I do baby it something fierce, it is the only new vehicle I ever had and I can't afford another one. Lack of power is not a concern. And if you throw all the tools and trash off, which is rare, I have gotten 19mpg on several occasions, but it just won't hit 20. Seems like it weighed about #8300 empty with fuel.
