The higher octane will help keep from detonation, which is what is causing the M to diesel when you shut it off hot. Unless you have a super high compression ratio I don't think it is neccessary to use the higher octane. Av gas is 100 octane and has lead in it. The best way to eliminate the run-on is let it cool down befor shutting it off. Also, the newer IH tractors had an electric solenoid on the Main adjusting screw on the carb that would shut the fuel off completely when the switch was turned off. I don't know if theat could be put on an M or not.
