As El Toro says, if you have removed the dist/mag, the rotor must point to # 1 on the cap when installing, and the piston next to the radiator must be on the compression stroke. The timing mark is on the flywheel, which is viewed through the hole in the bottom of the torque tube. This is a VERY thin mark that may are may not have some letters stamped next to it. When at TDC on #1, this mark must align with the mark on the cast cover behind the oil pan, all viewed thru the hole. All this is separate from the valve timing -- although both have to be set right for the tractor to run properly.
