Not to sound crass, but you obviously weren't careful enough... Otherwise it'd work, right? Magneto or distributor ignition? With a distributor, there should be a wire running from the starter, through the switch, to the coil. There should be NO other wires running to the switch, from the switch, or to the coil, other than the jumper from the coil to the distributor.
