IL Farmer, I am not disputing the advice that others have given you, but I want to add something that you might try. If the tractor has "slobering injectors" you will get the behaviour that you are describing. Diesel injector cleaners are available on the market and well worth trying. For less than $5 you can try some out and then you will know. My experience with a used diesel I bought was that the tractor went from smoking and not starting without ether to a tractor that starts easily and does not smoke after warm up,all from using injector cleaner through several tanks of fuel, and I continue to treat it on occasion. There is also the importance of the tractor getting up to operating temperature on diesel. Good luck and I hope its an easy fix...Mike in Exeter Ontario
