600 diesel smokes

I have a 600 diesel that runs perfect on gas, but blows white smoke when running on diesel. I've tried moving the timing all over and found where it runs the best, but still smokes. Doesn't seem to have the power it should either. The fuel pressure gauge on the pump shows high pressure. If the tractor is given a tiny shot of ether, it will run perfect for a minute or two before going back to smoking. I'm not sure what to do now, is it not getting enough fuel somehow?
