Make sure the ignition timing is set AT or just AFTER top dead center when at cranking speed. If timing is advanced too much it may cause exhaust popping and kick-back while trying to start the engine. Many old timers had broken arms or wrists to attest to that fact. These slow running engines don"t require much timing advance while running compared to a car or truck engine that runs at 3-4,000+ RPM"s. With the engine warmed up and idling, re-adjust your idle mixture and idle speed screws for best operation. Run at fast idle (wide open throttle, no load), turn high speed mixture screw in & out to find the "sweet spot" halfways between rich & lean. Turn the high speed mixture screw out 1/2 to 1 turn to allow a little extra fuel for pulling a load.
