Cotton, if you could post a pic of your tractor it would help. i will bet that yours is a Stage II Super M, since you didn't metion anything about a TA or LPTO. The 500 you made mention too, only applies to the Stage III SMTA models.
Your tractor probably has the cross wise tank, With the Fill,Vapor,bleed, Liquid and vapor fuel valves faceing the rear of the tractor. The steering shaft goes through the tank.
your tank setup will probably look like the tank on the W6, on page 107 of Guy Fays Letter series book.
Now back, to the 500 IH SMTA LPs........
The tank is a longwise tank with the tractor. The steering shaft goes through it too. The one unusal feature is the valve assembly is a mono-valve setup @ the 11:00 position at the rear of the tank (while sitting un the seat) Not a series of valves strung across the side of thr tank.
The SMTA LPs will carry the winged SMTA decal usually. Though I have seen a pic of what looks like A Stage II Super but has TA and LPTO.
Most of those tractors came to Texas and the Deep South or where LP was popular.
A Tank Company in Lubbock and San Angelo Texas was where the tractors were sent.
There are No consecutive Serial #s. At least from what I have bee able to find out.
Tractors were sent to The tank Companies on truck and then the trucks were loaded up with tank and sent back to the factor for compleation too.
All the tractos were concidered Factory built. Not field conversion. Hope this helps.
