Maybe the crud isn't in the bottom of the tank but in the line between the tank and the primary fuel filter. Our 966 started doing something similar. I would start it up drive for a little while and then it would lose power and start to die out. Let it sit a while and it would start right up and be fine a little while longer. We checked the tank and it was clean. My dad took the fuel cap off, took off the primary filter and blew compressed air through the tube between the tank and the filter housing. A little chunk of something flew out and the tractor has run great since and has more power throughout the rpm range. I always like to start with cheap things like this and then move up to expensive things like injection pumps. Hope this helps.
