The A/B models had pipe plugs in nearly all the fill/drain/check locations. Later years IH tended to use more recessed plugs in the same locations. Yes, IH said to dump some oil in the plug on top of the pulley attachment when the attachment was installed on early tractors, but adding there after a fluid change is no more necessary than it is to take the top cover off and squirt oil on all the transmission bearings after a change. The main reason for the plug is so you can see the bevel gears when you are setting the mesh. You can leave the level in the final drive housings just below the pan gasket level to reduce weaping at the gasket. It doesn't need to be clear to the fill/level plug. I would not use any engine oil in the transmission. The EP property of gear oil is important, particularly for the differential.
