No, you're on the right track. The situation you describe shouts sticking float to me... especially the way it sometimes clears up when you tap it on the bottom. Do check the gas tank, but your carb should have a screen in place that keeps the big stuff out. If you have a leak in the float the best way to check is to submurge it in a pand of near-boiling water. If there is a leak, it will blow bubbles. If you are 100% sure the float isn't contacting the carb body, be sure to check that the hinge and hinge pin aren't binding.

Keep at it, it's something simple and when you find it you won't have to bother with it for another 50 years.
