If it's cast iron, and you have all springs and rubber parts removed, AND you get the wife or S.O. sent on a shopping trip, you can bake it in the oven for a couple of hours at 300 to 400 degrees. (I'm not responsible for what happens when SHE comes home, and notices the smell!) The gunk will char and can easily be brushed off. Or, instead of the oven trick, get some cheap sray oven clean from the dollar store, and hose it down a few times, until the lye in the oven cleaner disolves the gunk, and then clean it with warm soapy water, and dry thoroughly with compressed air. (Hopefully, the need for eye protection will be obvious!)
