Hi Rick, the 574 only had a gravity feed to the injection pump. Starting with the simple things first check that the STOP/START/RUN lever to injection pump is working properly. See picture at this website: http://www.realdiesel.com/images/vapump_023.jpg The top lever on the side of the injection pump is the throttle, the bottom lever is the STOP/START/RUN control. The picture shows it in the RUN position. The START position is when the lever is just touching the plunger, the STOP position is when the lever is against the STOP adjustment with the plunger completely depressed. Another problem is the thermostat is not working properly and the engine is not up to running tempature. If the engine is to cold it will not burn the Diesel fuel properly and will blow white smoke and slobber(raw fuel or black oily substance running down exhaust manifold, inside muffler etc.). Next is someone adjusted the RUN stop adjustment screw on the injection pump. With reference to the picture on the web site, the RUN stop screw adjustment is in the position for a 684 putting out about 62 PTO HP. If the RUN stop adjust screw is backed off so the STOP/START/RUN lever hits the holding bracket for the RUN stop adjust screw then the engine will be over fuelled and putting out about 70 PTO HP and will again blow white smoke and slobber when idling about. One solution is that when your engine is idling around don't pull the STOP/START/RUN lever all the way to the top, leave it down a 1/4 inch or so. This will reduce the amount of fuel injected to the cylinders. Another cause could be that the injection pump is timed to slow. The D239 is an excellent engine and will run a long time given normal maintanance. Hope this helps, please repost when you find solution. JB2
