Still rich, but I think I was a bit presumptuous on that float. It's a tall skinny (larger ID, same OD) brass one I got from The Fordson House; it holds fine, but to have any travel I just can't get it set low enough.
I had an old cork one that was together enough to experiment with: we tried that and got much better, but still can't get it to smooth out. The plugs get wet fast, and turning the main screw richer makes it even richer, leaner kills it. The old cork might be binding though.
Still not sure about that air valve; I was too close to risking damage to get it apart, so I didn't force it, but the valve sounds loose inside.
Maybe the condensor is funky (E4 mag) and giving a vicious circle of fits?
