Your basic everyday rust isn't actually magnetic. If it has a little bit of steel or iron left in it that hasn't rusted yet, yes, it will be attracted to a magnet. But most of the rust in a fuel tank won't be attracted to a magnet. I've bought several old tractors and my feeling is, once you take the tank off and clean out the rust, you're done fighting with it for your lifetime.....

In engines and transmissions, magnets will pick up small metal particles and prevent them from recirculating in the lube.
