As noted these seals can be a problem. Try this first. The original seals were thicker than today and they may have been replaced with thinner ones, if so they can be driven back enough to accommodate a new seal, only takes a quarter inch, and leave the old seal in there. As I remember a piece of 2 inch pipe does the job. Worth a try.
