Hi John, if the clutch pedal has 1/2 to 1" free travel then it is adjusted correctly. My experience with 454,495 & 684 when it starts slipping in 3rd or 4th High it is time to consider a clutch, pressure plate, bearings replacement and maybe turning the flywheel. Also if it slips to much you could damage the facing on the flywheel. My 2 cents JB2
