1979 464 International Transmission

I was driving down a paved road in high range, 4th gear when the tractor came to a sudden stop, locking up the wheels. After some playing with the shifter and clutch I managed to get the tractor to move in first gear. It works(1st gear) in both high and low range, but it does not matter where the shifter is located it still is in 1st gear and at some location locks up the transmission to the point of killing the motor????
