They used a lot of those 504's at APG for mowing off the firing ranges. They had armor plated cabs built on these tractors to protect the operators in case a dud was detonated. They received good service from these tractors. The maintenance was provided by a government contractor. I would think that 504 block could withstand being bored oversize at least up to .030". That seem to me to be odd for IH not to sleeve the engine in this tractor. I had a Chevy Vega with that aluminum block and they had a lot of problems with those engines. There was a machine shop not far from where I worked. The owner had a brother that worked at APG as a test driver and he happened to be our test driver on a test vehicle. I was telling him about the Vega and he said his brother was sleeving those engines and I pulled the engine and took it to him. It sure made a difference with that engine. It never used oil.
