I doubt it, at least not without modification. The entire shifting linkage is different on the 86's, because they didn't use the levers on the cowling. They used the levers on the console to the right hand side of the seat with cables connecting them to the transmission (I believe later ones got metal rods instead of cables). I know there were some modifications made to them for the new linkage. I would think that a 1566 trans would be a direct bolt in, as they shared rear chassis. Remember, I have never actually looked this up, I am just guessing here. As to the problem with your trans, probably a chipped tooth on a gear. If it were a bearing, it would do it whenever it was in any gear. Since yours only does it in 2nd and in any range, it is not in the range transmission, and is in the speed(rear) transmission. Keep us posted with what you find.
