It may be the cut-out relay in the voltage regulator isn't closed. That depends on the voltage output of the generator. Normally, the cut-out relay closes around 12.8 volts (or 6.5 volts on a 6 volts system). If your generator isn't putting out at least that voltage because the engine RPM isn't high enough or something's not letting the generator put out that voltage, the cut-out relay won't close and voltage won't go to the battery cable. And without voltage going to the battery cable, there's no voltage going to the coil and the engine dies. The easiest thing to do is check the voltage output at the generator.
