Owen, hope you don't mind if I try to clarify the answer. At rear of block a steel plate is bolted to the aluminum lower half of the rear main seal retainer and steel plate is part of the gasket surface for the oil pan. Center hole of steel plate is threaded and a stud is used, the 2 on each side of it are not threaded and the bolts go through plate before screwing into threads in engine block. So those 2 are longer unlike the other bolts that just go through pan to block. To first poster as Owen said its not uncommon for pan to have a crack at front. Correct you can't depend on bolts being in the right location after all these years.
