I put an 8 volt in my M and SM back the mid 80s. I did nothing to the charging system, and they worked fine. 6 volts will work IF all the connections are clean and tight, the ignition system is in good shape, and the engine doesn't have over-bore high compression pistons. An 8 volt battery will spin things a little faster, but may not have the amps to spin it longer. If your starter will crank the engine okay on 6 volts, you don't need 8. My M is now on 12 volts, as the generator bearings went bad, and it was easier/cheaper to convert than to fix. I'll probably change the SM to 12 volts this winter.
