1954 w 4 international orchard tractor

The engine has developed a knock. It sounds like its coming from the top. I have been told its either a P rod or there needs to be an adjustment. Are there any paticular way of telling without pulling apart the engine which it is..does one thing act differently than the other when it needs repair?
