Will's got it right. There is one other possibility, however, and I don't know if it could apply to your tractor, or not. Some of the old Farmalls came from the factory with a mag, and a crank starter. Battery ignition, starter, etc, were added later when the farmer got tired of hand-cranking the beast. (On an M, that would take just once for me!)
Some of the dealer-or-farmer installed starter switches mounted on a small pad to the left of the steering post. I have a '43 H with that feature.
