Hi Scott, a 674D has a German D239 direct start Diesel engine and there are no glow plugs but there is a setting on the Stop/Start/Run lever that is the start position and it works like a choke on a gasoline engine. There should be a decal beside the Stop/Start/Run lever with the Start position marked but it is probably been worn off a long time ago. The Start position is about 1/4 of the way to the Run position. You can check this with the tractor SHUT OFF, look at the side of the injection pump at the front left of the engine block, you will see a lever connected to the control cable from the Stop/Start/Run lever. When the lever is in the RUN position the lever on the side of the injection pump must limit on the adjustment screw on the bottom front of the injection pump. In the Stop position the lever must fully depress the plumger on the adjustment screw at the top rear of the injection pump. The Start position is where the plunger is fully extended on the Stop adjustement screw. Starting procedures: 1)Open throttle about 1/4. 2)Put Stop/Start/Run lever in Start position. 3)Depress clutch. 4)Turn Start switch, if engine does not start after about in 15 seconds give a small shot of ether. DO NOT USE to much ether or engine will lockup. 5)Once engine has started let it run on the Start position for 1 or 2 minutes then move to the Run position. With a good battery and winter Diesel fuel the 674 should start to 32F without ether and to about 10F with ether and colder than 10F requires a recirculating heater. If the 674 is always hard to start, I would suspect the injection pump is timed to slow. The sympton is in warm weather the engine requires several revolutions to start and white smoke blows out the exhuast. Re Start switch not working, I can't remember if the 674 has a clutch safety switch. These safety switches were always troublesome. If present it is mounted so the arm on the clutch pedal makes cotact with the switch. When the clutch is depressed the switch is supposed to close and allow the power to be applied to the starter. Re hydraulic problems with bucket dumping, I would suspect a restriction in a hydraulic line(squashed steel hydraulic line) or the control valves are not connected properly. Hope this helps JB2
