Today's gas will really mess up an engine, I wouldn't let it sit in there more than a couple of months. I've had it mess up mowers and my tiller in 6 months or so. My dad left some in a generator for almost a year and it never ran right until I overhauled the carb. It had crud caked up in the bowl and the idle jet was corroded completely shut.

I've had good luck with Stabil the last year or so, with it you can probably get by with storing the gas for a year, but diesel will still last MUCH longer. you can get fuel additives for diesel with anti bacterial chemicals in it that will let it last longer. We've had diesel for a year and never had any problems with it at all.
