How Long Does Diesel Fuel Keep?

Thinking about getting a diesel powered generator. How long does
diesel fuel stay good? Besides keeping condensation out of the
tank, are there additives or special filters that can be used to
extend fuel life? What keeps longer, diesel or gasoline? I seem to
recall a diesel holding tank tending to grow more biological "stuff"
than a gasoline tank. Is that true?
