You can start by taking out the three bolts that hold the shifter lever down. Look inside you will see three steal bars with notches in them. The shifter fits in the notches. All three notches should line up and be in center position to be in nuetral. You can move these with a pry bar. You may have to rock wheels a little to move them. Replace shifter and try it. Shift carfully until you have time to rebuild the shifter peg.
