I think your guess is correct. I know I don't use my H hard enough to burn the carbon out of the exhaust. When they mostly idle around, shoot seems to build up. When you start up the exhaust system is cold. Water is a by product of combustion and cools on the sides of the cold exhaust stack. It loosens the soot and sprinkles it out. You may try to lean the tractor somewhat for the type of work you are doing. I believe if it were taken out and worked hard and up to temperature the sooty stuff would dissapear.
