I have run a 686 with a d312 non hydro for the last 10 years and it is a great tractor. We have 3 JDs and 2 IHs and this is my father's favorite. Good power, smooth engine, nice operators station, good hydraulics. I do think $10,000 is a bit high unless you know the condition of more than the engine and ta. Make sure the hydraulics are in good shape by hooking both the remotes and the three point hitch to something. When working properly, they are quick and powerfull. Make sure the ta or shift handle doesn't hit the metal guards in any gear (it is adjustable). Connect to a PTO attachment. The PTO should engage smoothly. It is about the best control lever on a tractor I have found. Check the brakes. They are dry disks and have a tendancy to grab when cold and need to be adjusted periodically. The can work very good, or they can work very bad depending on condition. Other things to look for that I have had to fix: tie rod ends, slop in the front axle supports, slop in the rear axle clamps (drive down the road and make sure the rear tires are spinning true), slop in the Draw bar supports (draw bar has a raised support in front making it rock a bit more than a straight one), check the clutch by riding it a bit. It shouldn't surge. Overall it is a great tractor and cheap parts are readilly available but is at 30 years old.

They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
