When I build mine I flip the original upside down. I drill out the holes the generator bolted to 3/8. I then shim out the alternator on the front of the bracket with washers or a spacer, your choice. I also build a spacer for between the arms of the bracket. I run a long 3/8" bolt through both arms, spacers, and the bottom of the alternator. Then, I elongate the hole in the top support so that there is an adjustment to tighten the belt. The advantage to this is the alternator sits tight against the valve cover not modifications to the hood are necessary. Also, the stock belt on the M generator will work if you use the original diameter pulley on the alternator. Actually, unless you are driving a bunch of lights or other high amp load, the narrow pulley from the car will work just fine. Mines been on for about 20 years now
