Best way to check for spark?

So whats the BESt way to check for spark...simply ground a plug to the block and have somebody turn it over? What about those spark tester that i have heard of from automotive stores? Whats the cost of them?? Just trying to figure out the best way to check for spark and then to do the points...which don't look like fun to do with a Magneto
