super c won't quit

i have a super c, wired up as #6 of bob m"s wiring diagrams. its been converted to 12v a long time, and has worked normally, stopping with the switch. recently, the alternator stopped charging, so i got a new one. after i hooked it up, the engine won"t stop using the switch. i have to unhook the wire off the bat terminal on the alternator to get it stopped. any ideas where to look for the solution? i unhooked the wire off one side of the resistor but that made no difference. what is the function of the warning light in the circuit? thanks.
