The warning light serves two functions: 1 - It lights whenever the ignition is "on" and the alternator is NOT charging (same as the battery idiot light in your car's dash...), and 2 - It limits backflow current from the alternator when you turn the ignition off to a level below that required to fire the coil. If the motor runs on after you kill the ignition switch it means the warning lamp is drawing too much current. Solution is to replace the bulb with one with a smaller current rating - like a #1815, #168 or #194 instrument panel/side marker bulb. Alternatively you can install a diode (1N4004 or similar) in series with the lamp, with the diode band end wired to the alternator #1 terminal..
