Welding on shifter?

What type of weld(rod #)works best for building up the bottom end of the shift lever. Got an A that gets stuck in gear once in a while. The shifter looks like cast iron - Is it and does it need to be pre-heated before any welding is done to it? Thanks for any replies,Best Regards.
