To find out if that shifter is cast iron (which I seriously doubt) or not, take a file to it. If it files real easy and the material kind of “flakes off” and looks kind of powdery then it is cast iron and needs to be handled as Fredd posted. If it files hard and the filings look more like fine metal “slivers”, then it is mild steel and can be welded with 6011, 6013, 7014, 7018, or any other mild steel rod of your choice. Build it up, grind it down so that it is snug in the rails both side to side and fore and aft but still moves fairly easily. It will get loose again with time. They always do! :>)
