First are you certain it is not charging? Can verify by watching the ammeter or sticking an accurate voltmeter across the battery - exactly as the good Captain recommends below. (If using the ammeter verify IT is working first: Turn on the ignition or the lights with the engine stopped - the hand should deflect to the "-" side of 0). If you determine it's indeed NOT charging, first check the easy stuff: Is BOTH of the belts properly tensioned? Are all the wiring connections in the right place and tight? (Pay particular attention to the pair of auxiliary connections at the plug at the back of the alternator.) If the system is equipped with a warning light is it working? (The alternator cannot charge if the bulb is burned out...) If you find nothing out of order, suggest then you remove the alternator and bring it to your nearest NAPA, AutoZone, Advantage Auto, etc. They will test the alternator for free. And if it's determined it's bad they can sell you a rebuilt unit for $40 or so. Hope this helps!
