It sounds like your well on the way to having that B running again ;-) I can't imagine why the carb would be beveled, but yeah, that would certainly cause starting problems if the mating surfaces are not flat. I have a book by Guy Fay titled Farmall Letter Series Tractors. It shows several pictures of the B and the wide right axle. There's one section that points out that the Farmall B was intended for farmers who needed a small tractor but also needed to cultivate two rows at a time.
