Hi Jake,
It"s coming along. I got the cam out and in without much trouble
and borrowed the wear ring installer from the dealer. At first
they just gave me the seal installer and I couldn"t figure out how
they used that for the wear ring. When I asked about it, they said
I needed the other tool. DUH! I thought that"s what I asked for in
the first place.
Got .006 milled off the head. Valve train looks excellent,
cylinders look excellent, cam journals are well within specs.
Couldn"t find any cause of the antifreeze leak. I hope the new
head gasket and milling take care of it. I put the head on tonight
and torqued it down. Should those be re-torqued after running?
It would be a real bear with all that stuff on top of the motor.
I replaced the oil pump. They charged something like $95 plus a
$50 core, but then they only gave me $10 for my old pump. I
thought that was odd.
When I disassembled the motor I found that the injection pump
was out of time by one gear tooth and some of the valves had
.045 lash. I"m hoping that I notice an improvement this next
summer!
Thanks for asking and thanks for all your help! I may need more.
By the way, do you know of any of these that had coolant leaks
through or around the sleeves? Dealership mech said he"s never
seen the Cummins have those problems, just head gaskets
usually.
