You should have a terminal on the key starter switch that only has voltage when the key is in the start position. You should have another terminal on the switch that feeds voltage to your ignition. Whenever the switch is in the on position there should be voltage here at all times. Take a volt meter and check for voltage on the terminal on your switch that feeds the ignition when cranking. If there's no voltage to your ignition during cranking your switch may be the problem. You said the engine fires when you let off on cranking. Hal PS: Is this a 12 volt system with a ballast resistor? It can cause this if resistor is defective.
