Guess I never did answer your question, just rambled on. Definitely go ahead & open the starter up to see what's going on inside. Just mark a line on the case sections so you get it back together right. I'd never had a starter apart until the first time either, so go ahead & don't be afraid of it. You should be able to get parts from parts stores. Farm & Fleet even has Delco starter kits [brushes, bushings, & whatever] at our local store. Maybe ten to fifteen bucks. Last resort is if it's too bad, put it back together & trade it in on a rebuilt.
