No, very few had shutters. Most used a roll up curtain. Most were kerosen, start on gas then switch to kerosene when hot. I suppose gas models would have had only the single fuel tank and a manifold without the heat deflector valve. The belt pulley runs all the time the clutch is engaged. You could have somebody hold the clutch pedal down or prop it with a stick for starting. Also the pulley runs counter-clockwise. Most people took the pulley off when not in use and they are rather hard to find.
