as said above, most of the time to tell the diff. you look at the brakes. straight M has band brakes, SM has discs. as for a SMTA, it will have a torque amplifier handle on left side, next to gas tank. essentially it splits every gear into 2 gears. a high and a low. thats in a nutshell, it can be more complicated if need be. as for the emblems, most people i know havent been real lucky as far as them being there. if you are lucky enough to still have one a straight M will have an emblem on radiator housing that says "farmall". a SM will have a somewhat square "IH" emblem. good luck
